Senate set for more time in Washington to pass Trump agenda

The Senate is set to spend more time in Washington next year as Republicans look to expeditiously usher President-elect Trump’s agenda through Congress.

According to the 2025 Senate calendar, the chamber is slated to be in session for 10 straight weeks to open the 119th Congress and not have its first recess until March.

The chamber is also planning on being in town for the vast majority of Fridays, both during that stretch and throughout the year.

A normal work week in recent years has saw senators fly in for votes on Monday evening and leave town early Thursday afternoon.

“Get ready to work,” Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.), the incoming majority leader, said announcing the schedule.

The upper chamber will be in session for 179 days in 2025. In comparison, the Senate was in session for 158 days in 2021, the first year of President Biden’s term.

The House is expected to be in for 136 days, according to its calendar

The intense push is due in part to not only moving Trump’s agenda through, but for green-lighting his cabinet and nominees for what will be a singular term.

Senate Republicans vocally complained about the lack of working days during 2024, especially with a number of weeks that started on a Tuesday.
