Former Trump senior adviser David Urban said he thinks former national security adviser John Bolton “should be protected” after Presid]ent Trump revoked his Secret Service protection.
“I don’t know what the intelligence looks like,” Urban said Tuesdayon CNN. “If there’s an active threat still on former ambassador Bolton’s life, I think he should have security.”
Urban, a regular CNN contributor, joined “The Source” for a panel, where he highlighted the longstanding tradition of the U.S. providing protection for people who have threats against their life for defending the country.
“If John Bolton did things in our nation’s defense that put his life at risk, then he should be defended by our nation for as long as it takes,” Urban said.
He noted that no matter if a person is a president, former president or other public official, if a foreign government wants to kill that person, the country has an “obligation” to defend and protect them.
“I think John Bolton should be protected,” Urban said.
Mediaite first noted Urban’s remarks.
Bolton announced on Tuesday that Trump had ended his Secret Service protection. He said he was disappointed but not surprised, as their relationship since serving in the first administration had soured.
Bolton has been a critic of Iran and received threats from the country after he left the first Trump administration.
Trump defended his decision later Tuesday, saying there was “enough time” granted to Bolton.
“We take a job, you take a job, you want to do a job, we’re not going to have security on people for the rest of their lives,” Trump said. “Why should we?”
